It was developed by Quintet, whose legendary palmares also includes the Trilogy Soul Blazer, Robotrek and The Granstream Saga. There was a sequel to activate, made by Quintet, and exit on Super Nintendo in 1993, but she got rid of the simulation mechanism. Although it has a dark fantastic aesthetic and beautiful graphics, it was simply not the rest of the unique original that the fans hoped. There was also a spiritual successor to the original Actraver on the modern consoles, called Solseraph, which was good, but hardly at the same level as the game that inspired it.
Finally, in 2021, released from nowhere, September 23, Nintendo was surprisingly announced that a remake of the original Actraver would be available for modern consoles on the same day. I guess many fans of the original have downloaded Actraisse Renaissance without thinking about twice, just as I did. Unfortunately, although the bones of acting are something special, almost all the decisions taken in Actrais Renaissance are for the worse.
the good the bad and the ugly
Let s be positive and start with good. Yuzo Koshiro, which is probably the most appreciated for his work on the Streets of Rage series, has composed the music of the original Actraver, has returned and modernized its classic partition. All new orchestrations are well sounding and really retain the strong melodies of the original songs. There is a jukebox where music can be unlocked and played. And the music can be tilted between the Renaissance partition and that of Super Nintendo.
Some movements have been added to the Knight s repertoire, such as ascending and descending strikes. There are hidden power-ups everywhere, and most platform levels require multiple parts to find everything. The game starts with a magnificent anime style kinematics, and this art translates very well by scenes of dialogue between levels.
Unfortunately, that s about everything. Level Graphics, Actrais Renaissance really looks like a mobile game. The graphics are actually pre-rendered, in the Donkey Kong Country style, which seems great, but the models of characters and monsters are quite ugly. The backgrounds and environmental effects are beautiful, but the framerate jumps to the point that it really bothered me, and I am not intransigent against the decreases of Framerate. The frequency of images can be changed by reducing the environmental effects on the switch, which improves, but does not correct the frequency of images. The PS4 version has the same framerate not quite bad with or without the environmental effects, making it the preferable version. The only aspect of the Switch version of Actraisan Renaissance compared to its competitors is its portability.
So, in the platform sections, the controls are good, but the graphics are bad. And in the city simulation sections, the graphics are good enough, but I did not appreciate the changes made to the gameplay. I guess to lengthen the main campaign, the developers have decided to add sections of Tower Defense. These sections are quite bland, but competent, but what makes them exasperating, it is the insane speed to which the player must browse them to advance the story. These sections have completely ruined the balance and fluidity of play styles and were an unwanted addition.
The other great complaint I had with Actrais Renaissance is that there were very unexpected difficulty peakements throughout the game. Some sections could be crossed without any effort, only to reach a boss that would take Many attempts to be defeated. One of the most subtle triumphs of the original Actraiser was its flow. Despite its radically different play styles, the original game has made a very fluid transition and had a stable and comfortable difficulty ramp. Almost all decisions in Actraver Renaissance seem designed to disrupt this flow.
While the basic action and city construction platform mix is a beauty thing, this Renaissance version of Actraver is burned by framinerate decreases causing transportation evil, models of pre-rendered characters Laids and Tower Defense sections far too frequent. If Actraisrais Renaissance is your only way to act to act, then make you happy, but I highly recommend buying a Super Nintendo with a game cartridge or a Wii with the download of the installed virtual console.
